DIRECTOR OF MARINE (JG3 / SG3)
MARINE DEPARTMENT
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

a. Citizens or permanent resident of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam;
b. Holder of a valid Certificate of Competency (CoC) Class 1 (Deck) or (Engine);
c. Has a minimum Bachelor’s Degree in maritime or equivalent in related field as determined by the
Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam (MPABD). Having higher qualification is an
advantage; and
d. Priority will be given to holders of Master’s Degree in Maritime or equivalent thereto recognized by
the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam;
e. Has a minimum ten (10) years of working experience in maritime industry administration / shipping
/ ports or in related field.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

a. Must have extensive knowledge and understanding of MPABD Act, Merchant Shipping Order 2002 and
the subsidiary legislation, including knowledge of Brunei Darussalam waters and port limit areas;
b. Must be proficient in English and Malay languages;
c. Skilled in Information Technology (IT);
d. Has knowledge in the Islamic religion, national customs, Bruneian culture, social, economic and
political development of Brunei Darussalam; and
e. Applicants who have a professional qualification or become a member of the Nautical Institute or
equivalent institute are one of the advantages;
f. Other terms and conditions governed by regulations that take effect from time to time.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Marine shall be responsible:
a. To ensure the administration and management of Marine Department including to advise the
Authority on maritime related matters;
b. To ensure safe and efficient maritime operations;
c. To lead a team of experienced and trained maritime professionals;
d. To advise the Government on all matters relating to maritime transport and the provision of marine
and port services and facilities;
e. To facilitate the discharge of international obligations of the Government in respect of maritime
transport;
f. To exercise the regulatory functions in respect of merchant shipping, particularly in the manning of
vessels;
g. To perform such other functions as conferred on the Authority by the MPABD Act or any other written
law as amended; and
h. To perform any other tasks assigned by the Authority or Chief Executive from time to time
